Cultural Details for Picea pungens var. glauca 'Fastigiata'

Columnar Colorado Blue Spruce

Monoecious, staminate orange, pistillate greenish or purple.

Fruit Details:
Cylindrical but slightly narrowed at each end, 2-4" long, 1-1.25" wide, green with violet bloom, pale shining brown when mature, scales wavy, oval, blunt and jaggedly toothed at apex, short stalk

Disease / Insect Problems or Resistance:
Subject to spruce gall aphid, Adelges cooleyi, which causes tips of branches to die, spruce budworm and spider mite, Cytospora canker may infect lower branches, Phomopsis occulta caused branch dieback in Michigan nurseries.

Native Habitat:
Species native to Southwestern United States; Rocky Mountains from Colorado to Utah to New Mexico and Wyoming. Introduced about 1862.

Other Features:
Very stiff and formal in outline

Culture and Care:
Prefers rich, moist soil in full sunlight although is more drought tolerant than other Picea; very adaptable Seed requires no pretreatment, though most of the cultivars are grafted onto seedling understocks.
