Cultural Details for Acer palmatum

Common Name:
Japanese Maple

Growth Rate:
Medium 10-15' over a 10 year period.

Average Mature Height:
15-25', a great variation in this species due to large # of cultivars.

Average Mature Width:
15-25'

Flower Details:
Small red to purple, arching pendulous in May-June. Emerges with new leaves of season.

Fruit Details:
Samara .50-.75" long, wings .25-37". Ripens September- October.

Fall Color:
Yellow, bronze, orange, purple and red.

Bark Details:
Young stems very green to polished reddish-purple and red, older graycast.

Disease / Insect Problems or Resistance:
Few. A canker on young propagates caused by Colletotrichum acutatum.

Native Habitat:
Zones 5-8, Japan, China and Korea introduced to England in 1820.

Other Features:
Due to the tremendous number of cultivars research of each cultivar is required.

Culture and Care:
Transplants balled and burlapped prefers well drained, moist, high organic matter soil.
